The Checklist.

We all know the stress and panic that comes alongside preparing for a trip or holiday, no matter the scale of the visit there is always a million and one things to sort out.

The Logistics

There are so many important things to remember when you're planning a trip of any kind, even more so on a long haul trip. So many of these things are so easily overlooked, as I discovered myself when planning this trip.

- Passport: make sure its plenty in date.
- Visas: Be sure to purchase well in advance to avoid any stress.
- Vaccinations: a visit to  the doctor is the best way to find out what you need for each country, saves any confusion that accompanies searching on the internet, trust me.
- Currency: research what methods will work best for you, be it cash or a traveller card.
- Insurance: an obvious necessity.

The Plan

Whilst part of the fun of any trip is the spontaneity factor, it is important to have a vague idea of what you are going to get up to in order to plan and organise accordingly.

- Budget: Having a vague idea of how much things are going to cost and how much you are willing to spend will help you plan your trip and motivate you to not only save the money but in sticking to your set budget when you're away.
- Accommodation: Whilst in a backpacking situation its unlikely to have every piece of accommodation sorted prior to the trip, it would be a wise idea to book a place to stay for your first night in each location. That way it saves any hassle of trying to find a decent place to rest your head when your knackered from your however long flight and just want to crash out.
- Excursions: If there are specific activities or mini trips you want to take, research in advance to get an idea of prices, you can then factor this into your planning. There would be nothing worse then getting to that much anticipated skydive on the last week of the trip to find out you've run out of pennies.

Packing

The bit I hate most when it comes to any trip, I am a notorious over packer so I am currently facing the problem of trying to fit 3 months of stuff into one backpack whilst being as harsh as I can with myself about what I can take.

- Basics are best: my aim is to take as many basic items as possible and mix and match to create different outfits.
- The necessities: travel plug, insect repellant, suncream, flip flops (for the beach & disgusting hostel showers).
- Documents: Its important to have multiple copies of your travel documents printed out and stored in different places amongst your belongings, just in case.

I'm sure there are plenty more things to consider and if I've missed anything glaringly obvious please let me know.
